BAKED HAM AND SCALLOPED POTATOES

🧂 Ingredients (Serves 6–8)
Main Ingredients

4 cups cooked ham, diced or cubed

6–7 medium russet potatoes, thinly sliced

1 large onion, thinly sliced

2 tbsp butter (for greasing the dish)
Cream Sauce

4 tbsp butter
-
4 tbsp flour
-
3 cups milk (whole milk or 2%)

1 cup chicken broth
-
1 tsp salt
-
½ tsp black pepper
-
½ tsp paprika
-
½–1 tsp garlic powder
-
Optional: ½ tsp dry mustard (adds depth)

Optional: ½ cup grated cheddar for extra richness

Optional topping: paprika or parsley
🔥 Instructions
1. Prep the oven
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter.
2. Make the cream sauce

In a saucepan, melt 4 tbsp butter.

Stir in flour and cook 1 minute until smooth and bubbly.

Slowly whisk in milk and chicken broth.

Add salt, pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and any optional seasonings.

Simmer 3–5 minutes until thickened.

(Optional) Stir in cheddar for a cheesy version.
3. Layer the dish
In the baking dish:

Spread a thin layer of sauce.

Add half the sliced potatoes.

Add half the onions.

Add half of the ham.
-
Pour over about half the sauce.
Repeat layers:

Onions
-
Ham
-
Remaining sauce
Make sure the top layer is well-covered with sauce.
4. Bake
Cover with foil and bake 60 minutes.
Remove foil and bake an additional 25–35 minutes, until:

Potatoes are tender

Top is golden and bubbling
5. Rest before serving
Let rest 10 minutes to thicken before slicing or spooning.

- 6 lb. fully cooked bone in half ham
- 3 lb. potatoes, pared and thinly sliced
- 4 med. onions, thinly sliced
- 3 tsp. salt
- 3 tbsp. butter
- 2 tbsp. flour
- 1/8 tsp. pepper
- 1/8 tsp. paprika
- 2 1/4 c. milk
- 1/4 c. brown sugar, packed
- 2 tbsp. honey or corn syrup
- 1/2 tsp. dry mustard

BAKED HAM RECIPE INSTRUCTIONS
2. Bake, uncovered, for 1 1/4 hours.
3. Place potatoes, onions and 2 teaspoons salt in large saucepan;cover with water. Bring to boiling and boil gently 5 minutes oruntil potatoes are just tender. Drain.
4. Melt butter in small saucepan. Remove from heat. Add flour, 1 teaspoon salt, pepper and paprika and stir until smooth. Gradually stir in milk. Bring to gentle boil, stirring constantly; boil gently 3 minutes. Set sauce aside.
5. Remove ham from oven. Increase oven temperature to 400 degrees. Mix brown sugar, honey and mustard; pat mixture on ham. Insert meat thermometer in center of ham, away from bone.
6. Place ham in center of 3 quart shallow baking dish or shallow casserole. Spoon drained potato mixture around ham. Pour sauce over potato mixture. Sprinkle potatoes with paprika.
7. Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until meat thermometer registers 130 degrees and sauce is bubbling. The baked ham recipe is ready to serve and makes 6-8 servings.Great taste !
